2.5 Day Business Classification Course

Welcome

Welcome to the 2.5 Day Business Classification Course. This workshop builds on concepts and steps introduced on the Functional Classification 5-Day Workshop. It focuses on the analysis of business activity and the development of the Business Classification Scheme.

Subjects come and go and administrative structures are always changing but an organization’s business activity is very stable. An organization will manage the same functions and perform the same major tasks day after day. It is the subject that changes or the administrative structure that changes. Function based classification systems are very stable and stand the test of time. The classification structure parallels the organization’s business activity which identifies which records must be created in order to comply with all recordkeeping requirements.

A Business Classification Scheme is a conceptual model of what an organization does and how it does it. It involves the identification and documentation of each business function, activity and transaction and the documentation of the flow of business processes and the transactions which comprise them. The analysis of business activity and the documented Business Classification Scheme is considered the foundation step in designing and implementing recordkeeping systems.
